Operation

Only few ankylosing spondylitis patients will need surgical treatment. In such an event it is usually hip replacement which is necessary. It should, however, not be expected that an operation will have optimal results in relieving the pain and the limited movement.

A limited number of people’s backs become so severely kyphotic that they have difficulties to look ahead and will have problems sitting and lying down. In such situations they may be helped by having the kyphosis surgically straightened.
