Adrenocortical hormone acts by significantly inhibiting inflammation in the joints and it is usually administered through injection in the affected joints of the arms and legs. It may also be administered as eye ointment, or eye drops in the treatment of eye inflammation. In rare occasions adrenocortical hormone is offered as tablets or intravenously.
Adrenocortical hormone is an effective treatment possibility but it is unfortunately associated with multiple and severe side effects. Therefore, this treatment may only be used during shorter periods. Adrenocortical hormone decalcifies the skeleton, which leads to osteoporosis. Furthermore, the hormone may alter the metabolism and subsequently affect the fat distribution of the body. The adrenocortical hormone may also lead to elevated blood-pressure and high blood sugar levels. In addition, adrenocortical hormone prohibits the immune defence system to react normally in the defence against infections.
